Over the time since I inadvertently discovered this site I have read a lot of really good fiction, a lot of partially good fiction, and sometimes some just plain bad fiction. Being a writer on the site myself I get that reviews are a matter of opinion, good and bad, but I'm not about to say what stories I think are what. No, I have something far more interesting that I want to say.

Some of the stories on this site have the most amazingly complex story lines that unbelievably just pop out of the fic writer's mind. I don't know if anyone has ever taken time to realize how complex these stories really get.

ObliqueRef, for example, takes our two favorite characters in his series and gives them this depth that almost seems like it belongs in a movie- not in fanfiction. But then Oblique has all of these other characters (such as Dawn, mirror Willow, Tara, Oz, and Oscar) that he also gives this unholy dimension to. And he keeps them alive by making reference to them after the story they were featured in is long over and complete. You can feel what the characters are feeling and identify with them even after they are gone (usually more so when they aren't).

Next, willowfan, (one of the more reviewed fic authors) has this series that you all might be familiar with, which I'll reference as the Lifeafter Series. Willowfan takes it another step up and uses NOT ONLY BTVS characters but also several made-up characters. Each of these characters is cared for and remembered through every addition to the series (with room for standard fic blooper). All of these characters are included to some point in each addition to the series.

On the poetry/songfic front I have to say that I am quite fond of videl. I don't know how, but whenever I find read videl's stuff I feel like Kennedy could have written it. It all expresses things that came out of Kennedy's personaliy during season 7. That overprotective, hard ass, but sensitive edge that just is Kennedy. It's all there. And with videl you can guarentee tons of it ranging from loving to hating poems/songs.

Another author who throws out millions of complex stories is ace. Ace has to have almost 30 stories ranging from a 1 chapter scene to a 28 chapter saga. Each story shows Kennedy, as well as other BTVS characters, in a light that's original. For example, Crazy (an exert from Connected), shows Kennedy and Willow's sexually frustrated humor (I guess that's what you call it). But most of all it keeps you laughing at these personality flaws that these characters do have.

I guess my point is that these complex plots and the abundance of characters are hard to deal with. It's part of the fanfic writer's complex mind. I'm just wondering: How do you think "we" do it?

Planning-
Knowing your characters-
Knowing your audience-
Knowing your own strengths and weaknesses-

A teacher told me once write the ending before you write the beginning! It makes good sense once you think about it.

Alright willowfan, even though the question wasn't geared toward you that's still an interesting response... and I think I'll have to stop myself from saying more or I might get myself into trouble

I only get replies from writer's that I compliment. Shame...

And ace... never stop unless the fic's are bad... and if you get reviews then they aren't bad...

I think every writer is talented in their own way, or at least has something ready to be unleashed below the surface. I can't really say how anybody else is able to write what they do...sometimes I'm not even sure how I myself manage to...but that's what's so good about reading something by your favourite authors. Wondering; "How do they do this? How can they come up with something so amazing and original yet so believable?"

I'm going to have to agree with Badger-
Every writer has the potential to be an excellent writer with hard work and dedication. It may not seem like it at the time you read their fics, but if you encourage even the worst of us we'll find some way to surprise you. Heck, a lot of my favorite writers (non BTVS) were absolutely horrible the first time I read their stories. Now it's like they have come into their own and written some amazing stuff.
