So, who here listens to music while writing? Do you like to invent little sound tracks for your fics, like I do?
If not, then I'm not really as much as a freak as that came off as. It was just your imagination:)
So let's see, for this most recent fic I've actually been going with silence, 'cause I've had concentration trouble, but with "thrill" I had a whole soundtrack mapped out. I listened to a lot of high-energy, super over the top fast paced stuff, with Rob Zombie, Prodigy, System of A Down, Kidney Thieves and Dead Kennedys (hey, that's funny) as my primary motivators. If you want a really fun time, imagine Rob Zombie's "Scum of the Earth" to the motorcycle scene in Thrill. One day want to do a flash animation of that scene. Ah, dreams.

Background music while writing? Heck, yes! And I do pick it according to the mood of the chapter. I also actively listen to music to get myself into a certain mood.
Chapter 17 of "Next Time There's an Apocalypse" actually might have a rather distinct soundtrack song - Break and Enter by Prodigy. Prodigy and Rammstein are my faves for more aggressive or action based scenes, or just scenes with attitude.
I also can imagine Fix hacking while listening to The Matrix -soundtrack... *G*
For the more sensual scenes, well Dead Can Dance has some really nice songs to get me in the mood, although the band is much more versatile than just makeout music.
The hardest time with the choice of music is when the mood in the text is supposed to be sort of "neutral", and I sometimes end up simply turning off WinAmp then. Unless I manage to find something really nice ambient stuff to go with. Sometimes, really brainless easy listening pop music works as well, especially for "on the road" type of scenes...
... yes, shocker. I listened to Savage Garden and Roxette while writing certain scenes. Oh what one has to suffer for the sake of fanfic!

I always need music. It's just... a part of my room! So even when I'm writing, yes there's music. Hey people think I'm nuts for studying while listening to music - it's the only reason I can study well: the music! Same thing when I'm writing, it inspires me. Although I need English music, no Dutch or any other language! It is a must! Then again, Dutch music doesn't really do it for me so hey! Ha! -xxx-

Oh God I have to have music when I write anything!!
As the others were saying, I choose the music depending on what I'm writing.
I find Bring me to Life a great one to listen to when you're writing angsty I need you stuff.
And going under is a great empowering track. lol
And then "Out of Reach" by Gabrielle is my heart wrencher one.
I programme them in and let rip.
Which may be why my fics suck. lol

Music. Music is basically my life, so if I'm ever not listening to something, I'm probably dead.
As far as fic writing goes, I'm partial to Unwritten Law, Evanescence, Linkin Park, Alkaline Trio and Nirvana for the angsty bits. Love scenes generally have Sarah McLachlan, Michelle Branch and Lonestar. Action has the honour of Korn, System of a Down, Prodigy, any rap I happen to be in the mood for [I assure you this is rare] and Dance/Trance/Technos stuff. Then I could go into the hundreds of songs I've written that I play when I'm writing to get myself in a particular mind set, because the lyrics and melody tend to bring me back to the place I was at when I wrote it.
Currently listening to: Fake - Korn

eh, for me it depends, sometimes if it's a song i really like it distracts me from writing (i.e. i'll be concentrating on the words of the song so much that i actually start writing them down unconsciously).

For me it depends on the night and the mood I'm in. Some nights I can have the radio or even TV on and it won't bother me, my muse is writing thru me and not even a bomb would stop it. Other nights when I am unfocused. even the hum of the air conditioner will distract me. But, I am unlearning this by routine.
What I like to listen to? Hm... We have this great new alt rock station they play all the good stuff like Evanescense, Charlotte, AFI, Peppers, Chevelles, and the list goes on -- not a bad sound in the bunch. Or I'll pop on the head phons and listen to a variety of stuffs from musicals to electronic to live albums. Note: I cannot listen to Blondie or anything Debbie Harry or I will not write she distracts me enough with her incredibly poetic, sometimes haunting lyrics I just have to listen.
I do not hear music to my words unless I am writing a song. When i write, I see everything just like it were up on a movie screen or in BtVS's case on the little screen on Tuesday. I even get friggin' camera angles, pans, lighting issues and will argue with the characters over hitting their marks.
